How appropriate that a testosterone infused manly nay fatherly movie should be released and received overwhelmingly at the beginning of homosexual appreciation month. Please note that I used neither the words gay or pride. Let’s take back our language.

In discussing this promise with Penny, Maverick says “I made a promise to his mom before she died… I was trying to do what I thought a good father should do.” -- I think that what comes after this is even more revealing; I don't remember the line word-for-word, but when Penny asks why didn't you tell him that he was doing what his mother requested? Maverick replies something to the effect that "He already hates me, no reason for him to hate his mother as well" -- There is a real man willing to take all the abuse to protect what is left of the family.

Just got back from seeing the movie. After watching trailers and various commentaries the past 2 years, it was definitely worth the wait. I appreciate your insight Mike. I shared many of the same impressions. Something I had not heard discussed (Spoiler Alert!) is the bond that forms between Maverick and Rooster. Like raw steel after reaching the flash point, they forge a relationship that is bound by brotherhood and battle that can only be experienced in the military. I also noted the banter between Maverick and Rooster was reminiscent of Maverick and Goose in the original and had me chuckling. I’m definitely going to see it again on the big screen, but am going to watch the original before I do.
