One of the things I have learned over the last 4 weeks since this all came to a head is the existential nature of the threat the Russians are treating this as. To them, this is about their very survival as a sovereign power on the European and Eurasian continents. It is truly a war to them, add to that their view that its a war against a cabal of evil empire’s tightly organized around this aged menace called NATO. Thus, their control of the cabal’s propaganda being pumped into their citizen’s brains is completely understandable. My CRUSADE Channel exists because of the ‘Murican people’s wish to escape the same media! In the last weeks, Russia took an already exacting speech environment to new extremes. A law was passed that would impose 15-year prison sentences for anyone spreading “fake news” about the Ukraine invasion; access was cut to Facebook and Twitter; stations like Echo Moskvi and TV Rain as well as BBC Russia, Radio Liberty, the New Times, Deutsche Welle, Doxa, and Latvia-based Meduza were effectively shut down; Wikipedia was threatened with a block over its invasion page; and national authorities have appeared to step in to prevent coverage of soldiers killed in the war, requiring local outlets to use terms like “special operation” instead.
To Taibbi, the Russians are acting out a War Game scenario, playing roles in some war of convenience that Putin has dragged them into; not waging what they believe is a Just war, a Jus ad Bellum (and there is an argument they can make to that end) that all Russians have an existential stake in.
While MAGA fiddles in sync with Big errything for the first time in forever (the result of a marvelously successful dis-information campaign) their supply shelves are running dry .
