The cacophonous roar of the 24-7outrage matrix that is the WWW and especially unSocial Media. They cannot take a breath from breathless flame fanning that is makingPrometheus himself jealous. Then there are the angry, spawnettes of George Floyd in the WNBA who can’t hate the whitenes (and amazing success) of Caitlan Clark and Sophie Cunningham — the actual “White Girls”, the Wayans brothers lampooned in their film by the same name.
Enter former New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees and Saturday’s Pro Football Hall of Fame Induction. Rarely, if ever, has there been a more dignified, classy and pro-family thing spoken by a famous athlete in my lifetime and Brees was sincere enough to drive the WhoDat faithful in attendance and yours truly watching from afar into joyous tears.
Here’s part of my commentary on this and my salutation to Drew from today’s show.
I had forgotten that. Some of the greatest NBA championship series ever. The Celtics versus the Lakers. Of course, you know, the Lakers had a dynasty for a while there. They had Magic. They had Kareem. They had James Worthy. What was his name? The white boy. The token white guy. Rambus. Kurt Rambus. And the Celtics had a dynasty.
They had Byrd. They had JoJo White. They had Robert the Chief Parrish. They had Kevin McHale. They had Danny Ainge. I mean, these were freaking—those basketball teams were flipping good. And of course, you know, you had the Bulls, who after that, you know, come along and do it.
And 3P twice with Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman. And there’s a really great age of basketball. But the guy’s making the point that even though they were serious, serious rivals when they played each other on the court. I mean, passionate rivals, yelling, scowling, rumbling, fumbling, stumbling. Bird and Johnson were actually good friends.
And promoters of each other off the court. That’s not what’s happening in the WNBA. You know, Maggie and I were watching a clip of Sophie Cunningham get almost decapitated last night. Was it last night or was it Saturday? I think it was Saturday night.
And a game by another player, she didn’t try to stop her by trying to get her hands on the ball. She tried to maul, and successfully maul, gave her a fat lip, little Sophie Cunningham. And she was ultimately ejected from the game. This is not sportsmanship or competition. And again, look at the career-long example of Drew Brees.
You know, Breeze’s last playoff game, I’ll never forget this. The image is seared in my who dat mind. In Breeze’s last playoff game, it’s a loss to Tampa Bay. It’s a home game, too. It’s a loss. Tom Brady is on his comeback, and he’s the quarterback for Tampa.

This is going to be Drew’s last game in a Saint uniform. I think it was his last game in the same uniform. Maybe he played one more year and they didn’t make the playoffs. But I know this is his. I hate computers. I hate all of them. I hate everyone that invented them.
I hate people that write software programs. I hate all of you. Sorry about that. I hit the space bar. I don’t even have iTunes open. In any event... The game’s over. The Saints have lost. The Bucs have won. This is the year the Bucs go on to win the Super Bowl, by the way. The Bucs have won,
and Drew Brees is not going to go across the field and take his helmet and take a swipe at Tom Brady or try to leg sweep him or whatever. He runs across the field. They shake hands. He gives him a hug. He said, hey, man, you guys played a great game. Best of luck. I hope you win.
I mean, it’s on tape. You can actually hear that that’s pretty much what he said. That’s what sports are supposed to be about.
